The Narrow Path - A Dream
Tracy Schellhorn
This was my dream. I pray that the Lord uses it to redefine your own personal path. Even though everyone in this dream was heading in the right direction, not everyone would arrive at the destination. I ask the Lord of Glory to enlighten our path with the wisdom found in His word and the insight that comes from knowing Him.
The Narrow Path
I saw the narrow path, although it wasn’t that narrow. It was plenty wide enough for comfort, but it was a definitive road amidst sprawling acres off the path. So, in comparison to what was around it, it could be considered narrow.
I saw a couple of ways people get off the path. One was through the distraction of pleasures. The path itself was most pleasurable, but if you didn’t like the confines of the path, you would wander off into the grassy areas to play football, Frisbee, picnic, run, etc.
The people I saw off the road and in the grassy areas were still heading in the same direction as I was on the path, but they were off the path and distracted by their activities and pleasures.
Unfortunately, there were many pitfalls for these people, but they couldn’t see them because of their distraction with their activities. For instance, they might fall into a hole, get stuck in the mud, find themselves slowed down in the sand, or they might run into something -- All because they weren’t following the path laid out for them and were instead in pursuit of other things.
These people were off the right side of the path.
Off the left side of the path was another path. It was even more narrow than this one, and it was man-made. It was a counterfeit path. The people here thought they were on the path – that they were the right ones – and that they were right because their path was much more narrow than the one I was on.
However, because it was man-made, it wasn’t sturdy. It was like having a thin blanket laid on the ground to look like a road or path, but it did not have a firm foundation. It pointed the way, but those who tried to walk on it got stuck in the mud. Ladies’ heels went right through the path and into the mud. Men walking got mud and grass all over their shoes. Some got so burdened down that they were stuck. They couldn’t move forward any more. They were stuck in that place.
Most of these people were dressed up and looking good. Externally, they looked like everything was alright and like they were set upon the right path. They weren’t distracted like the others. They were definitely following the path of their own making, and they were quite proud of it.
Unfortunately, they were no better off than the others. The path of their own making was not sturdy enough to support them.
Interestingly enough, these people were heading in the direction of God’s path. However, we cannot bring ourselves to God. We must follow the path He has laid before us, or we will never get there.
This more narrow path was off the left side of the path.
I am reminded of Rick Joyner’s comments. He says there is a ditch on either side of the road. You can fall into the ditch of liberalism, and you can fall into the ditch of legalism. That’s what makes the road narrow.
What I saw depicted here shows how easy it is to get off the path, even though you are heading in the right direction, and get side-tracked for life.
“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” – Matthew 7:13-14
